At The Days End...

I usually miss the hay bales but I saw some combines harvesters yesterday so headed out to shoot the sun set amongst the bales. And what a sunset, absolutley beautiful! So here it is, my hay bale effort for 2011!

Why So Sad...?

I went to Dudley Zoo for the first time in nearly 2 years today. Since my last visit they have had a troop Baboons and this is the male.
Now from a technical point of view, this is pretty awful. It was shot at something like 3000+ ISO because it was raining, he was under trees and I needed a decent shutter speed so it’s choc full of noise.
His eyes just look so sad, I wonder why.

A Sneaky Peek...!

Here's a sneaky peak at three images from Sundays excellent family shoot with the Hicklins. It was another scorching day so we split up our time between the studio and the cool shade of the trees outside. Everybody was superb in front of the camera and I'm sure there is more than a few stars in the making amongst them!

It was really hot under the lights, well done to everybody for sticking with it, it's gonna be a great set of pictures!

It was really good to spend some time with the adults. It's not often I get the opportunity to shoot this type of image outside of weddings! More of this type of work please!

When Hayfever Strikes...!

I have wanted to get out and have a go at some poppies for a couple of weeks and finally go the time on Sunday evening. Unfortunatley my time out and about was cut very short due to horrific hayfever...

Not my best ever effort but not bad considering I sneezed that much I could hardly keep my eyes open!

Nan Isn't Going To Thank You For That...!

I wanted to do a little bit for me at some point this week. You can spend so long shooting for other people, you can begin to loose your vision. I think it's so important to keep shooting personal work.
I thought it would be nice to get some images of my lovely Nan. I can honestly say it was one of the most difficult sessions I've had! She wouldn't smile, wouldn't put her hearing aid in so she couldn't hear what I was saying to her, she feel asleep while I was shooting and repeatedly told me the cup of tea, which I had already finished, was going to go cold!

These aren't the type of images I had envisioned but as they are just for me, I just let my creative juices flow. When Mel saw them she said "Nan isn't going to thank you for those..."!

Thanks for looking as always

I Thought Photography Was About Making Pictures...

I seem to spend 90% of my time sitting, starring into my computer screen and only 10% of my time actually out there doing what I enjoy - taking photographs!

Album pages take the longest to create without doubt. I guess I could use a template or something like Graphi but every wedding I do always feels total different from the last when comes to putting it all together.

Oh, I've set up a facebook page - www.facebook.com/benpeasleyphotography  I'd love it if you found the time to drop by and hit the old "LIKE" button!

The Rock & The Castle...

Criccieth, Wales

A week away in Wales had me planning plenty of sunrises and sunsets. Unfortunatley it didn't pan out that way thanks to the great British weather! I only managed 1 decent session of each... Boo Hoo. Still never mind, I was quite happy with what I managed.

I learnt something when I shot this, if you have your tripod in the water on a shingle beach, the out going tide WILL move it no matter how deep you try to push it into the stones. Not good when you are exposing for 10 odd seconds!

3 shot HDR (-2/+2) blended in Photomatix and processed in CS3.

The Artist In The Landscape...

Wenlock Edge, Wenlock, Shropshire.

On my way back from a location scouting session for an up coming wedding, I drove past Wenlock Edge.
This gentleman was painting the vista in oils on canvas, it was stunning. He said the lightwas changing to fast, a problem photographers don't have to deal with in that respect!.
I liked the idea of the painter painting the landscape then me photographing the painter in the landscape, painting the landscape...! It reminded me of one of those repeating mirrors!

Straight in mage this one, single exposure, levels and curves tweaked in photoshop and warmed up just a touch more.

The Field Of Gold....

Himley, Dudley.

I finally got out for just an hour on Easter Sunday, the first time in many weeks. I powered down to Himley Hall to get the last hour before the park closed. I'd noticed this field a few weeks previous but the crop (whatever it maybe!) was to small to be interesting. It's a little bit bigger now so made the tracks in the field stand out nicely. I'd have liked a bit of movement but there was no wind! Still the light was beautiful!

3 exposure HDR (-/+2) processed in Photomatix & CS3 and thats about it.

Everything Has To Start Somewhere....

This is my first effort with my new studio lighting. I love learning new things and the challenges it brings. I quite like the being stripped of the certainty of what I know; look at the scene in front of you, check the composition, aperture, ISO, focus point all sorted then shutter release. It can, for me at least, become mundane and unexciting at times. Where as shooting with gear you have never used before (and don't know how to use properly!)in a way that you have never shot before makes things quite exciting again!

I'm reasonably pleased with it, there is inevitably things I will change for next time, move the key light further back, add another rim light on the left etc, etc but you live and learn don't you. It's great, I'm like a kid at Christmas!

Right, what do I put for this bit? 1/125th at f11, 1 key light, 1 rim/fill light and that’s about it!

The Impromptu Session...

An impromptu portrait session took place on Sunday night. Everybody was tired and excited, but it nearly worked! Kids and the best time of day to shoot don't really mix..!

Longing For A Letter

A few weeks ago I paid a visit to the Oak House in West Bromwich. It's very beautiful. It sits right in amongst rows of victorian terrace houses, beautiful in it's black and white splendour.
I have to say it was quite spooky and there where some strange goings on. I witnessed a huge travel chest move like it had been kicked when no body was near it. Then, standing at the top of the stairs shooting an image of the stairwell, something phyiscally shoved me and I had walk down two steps to steady myself. No body was in the house with me except the staff who where all across the other side of it. Needless to say, I soon legged it outside!
Still despite of that the light in this room with the dark wood was beautiful.

Hand held (-2/+2) belnded in Photomatix, processed in CS5. ISO was 400 so the noise was reduced in Niksoft Define.

The Church...

This was my first ever vertorama. This is when you realise that your tripod head only pans up so far. What do you do then? Take the camera of the tripod and boldly go hand held? Tilt the tripod dangerously backward risking a floor Vs. camera explosion or stick with what you shot? I stuck with I had.

Tech stuff is the identical to my last post except the mono conversion, so check that out too if you want to know how it's put together!

The Church & The Trinity...

St. John The Bapist Church, Hagley, Worc.

I was early for an appointment yesterday so I thought I'd drop into the little church on the hagley estate. I'd been once before but not been happy with what I shot so it was time for another go. I don't tend to like shooting in the late morning so I used it as an excuse to have a go at a couple of vertoramas (vertarama?). I'm quite pleased the result!

Sometimes when I have processed an image I sit and look at it and begin to wonder what drew me to the composition. Some images I have shot it was quite clear, pre-planned or just jumps out at you. Others, like this one, I just don't know. I remember thinking I liked the grave in for ground and the rest of it is a blur. Still it turned out ok I think!

4 shot vertorama, each image in the 'rama was a 3 image HDR (-2/+2) HDRs prepared in Photomatix, stitched & processed in CS5 converted to mono in Silver Efex.

The Alien Cannon...

An enjoyable afternoon spent at RAF Cosford on Friday with a friend of mine. I've always found this a very difficult place to shoot. Every time I have gone there I have never been happy with what I have come away with. This time though I had a secret weapon (no not the cannon!), a Nikon 14-24mm f2.8. It just opens the world up. You just begin to see things differently, it's a stunning lens, the colour rendition is superb!
I quite liked the alien feel of this field gun sitting in the load area of an Argosy.
